Background

The Sortes Sanctorum is a late antique text used for divination by dice; the earliest surviving copy is a 4th- or 5th-century Christian Greek papyrus. It was translated into Latin by the time the Council of Vannes (465) condemned its use.

How it works

The original version gave 216 answers selected by three ordered throws of a single die; a later version used one throw of three dice for 56 answers.
