Background

The Sortes Astrampsychi was a popular Greco-Roman fortune-telling guide ascribed to Astrampsychus, said to be a Persian magus or an Egyptian sage. Unlike other sortes it did not use dice.

How it works

The questioner chose a prewritten question with a number, spoke a number from one to ten, and the sum led through tables to one of ten possible replies.
