I Ching Yarrow-Stalk Method

The older, slower way of building an I Ching hexagram by repeatedly dividing and counting 50 yarrow stalks.

A description for now. An interactive tool for this method is planned but not built yet.

Background

The two main methods of building a hexagram use either 50 yarrow stalks or three coins. The yarrow method is the older and more ritual of the two.

How it works

One stalk is set aside and the rest are divided and counted off in fours in repeated rounds; the remainders give each line. Its probabilities for changing lines differ from the coin method.
