An I Ching method attributed to Shao Yong that builds a hexagram from numbers — a time, a count, an observed sign — instead of coins.

Background

An approach to I Ching divination known as Mei Hua Yi has been attributed to the Song-dynasty philosopher Shao Yong, part of his "image and number" study of the Changes. The attribution is traditional rather than firmly documented.

How it works

Numbers taken from the date and hour, or from something observed, are reduced to give an upper and lower trigram and a moving line, which are read with the Five Phases.
