Book & text oracles

Bibliomancy (Opening a Book at Random)

Opening a book — often a sacred text — at a random place and taking the passage as guidance.

Learn about itLearn onlyLiving tradition

This page describes the practice. There is deliberately no automated reading for it — see the notes below.

Background

Bibliomancy is the use of books in divination; using sacred books for divination is widespread across the world’s religions. Classical forms include the Sortes Vergilianae and Sortes Homericae.

How it works

With a question in mind, the reader opens the book at random and reads the first line or passage the eye or finger falls on.

Notes and limits

Culture: When the book is scripture, many religious communities have strong views — some forbid it, some practise it with prayer. The site does not draw random verses from sacred texts; consult your own tradition’s teachers.
