Background

Ashtamangala prasnam is a practice of the prashna branch held in high esteem in Kerala and Tulu Nadu. Its name refers to eight auspicious objects such as a ghee lamp, mirror, gold and white cloth; its authoritative text is Prasna Marga (1649).

How it works

After prayers, the astrologer divides 108 cowries into three heaps and counts each by eights; the remainders form a number read alongside a chart for the moment of the question.

Notes and limits

Culture: This is a ritual performed by trained astrologers, often for temples and families, with prayers and consecrated objects. It is described here rather than simulated; learn it from Kerala practitioners.
