The Arabic origin of geomancy: sixteen random lines of dots drawn in sand, turned into figures and read.

This page describes the practice. There is deliberately no automated reading for it — see the notes below.

Background

Arabic geomancy was an established divination system in Arabic-speaking Africa and the Middle East before passing into Europe. Its sixteen-figure process survives in various Arabic countries today, and tradition attributes its discovery to the prophet Idris.

How it works

The diviner draws sixteen lines of dots in sand without counting; their odd or even totals build the figures that are then interpreted, often with astrological additions.

Notes and limits

Culture: Practised by trained diviners within Muslim-majority societies, where its religious status is debated. The site’s geomancy tool follows the European shield-chart form, not a raml practitioner’s method.
