Vimshottari Dasha, Explained Simply

By Pandit Suresh · 4 May 2026

⏳

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology. It divides life into planetary periods (Mahadashas) totalling 120 years, each ruled by one of the nine grahas.

The sequence

  • ✦ Ketu — 7 years
  • ✦ Venus — 20 years
  • ✦ Sun — 6 years
  • ✦ Moon — 10 years
  • ✦ Mars — 7 years
  • ✦ Rahu — 18 years
  • ✦ Jupiter — 16 years
  • ✦ Saturn — 19 years
  • ✦ Mercury — 17 years

Your starting period is set by the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Each Mahadasha is sub-divided into Antardashas (sub-periods), which is where precise timing comes from.

A planet gives its results most strongly during its own dasha and antardasha.
